"NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR LIFE STORY!"
I've been described as the imaginary friend of children. Much like that of Drop Dead Fred, only less green and no I don't have red hair nor do i wish to ever dye it red. Perhaps its my sense of humour, I just like to say im normal... though not everyone would agree.
My name is Tyrone MacLean-Wilson (surname pronounced "Tie-Rown"), named after the talented 1950's actor Tyrone Power, who acted as the first original Zorro. I was born in 1984 in the city of Toronto, Ontario; raised in the largest and oldest project housing community in all of Canada, Regent Park. I'm also known as T-Bone.
Regent Park is where I lived for 2 decades of my life. Even though I've moved out of Regent Park, I still, however, am very much involved with the community on a daily basis. I work within the area, at a Youth Media Arts Center called Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre . Which I started working at in March of 2004.
While growing up in Regent Park, I was labeled by the system as an "at risk youth". A controversial term given to those at risk to becoming violent members of society or at risk to becoming a victim of violence or drug abuse. All that I knew it meant at the time was that I was different from everyone else in the city but the same as everyone else in Regent Park.
There were many organizations out there for youths given this label. I went to serveral of them through-out my youth; which I can honestly say may have saved my life.
In 1996 I got involved with two fantastic programs; Trails Youth Initiative and the Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre . Both programs had their unique ways of granting "at risk" youth opporuntities to do things they would normally never have.
Trails was an organization that took me away from the city and planted me deep in the nothern woods of Ontario to experince the true out-doors; away from city life. Though I was raised in the city of Toronto, I've always been a nature kind of guy; so these opportunities were amazing for me. Nature has always been something I've felt passion for. This is one of the reasons why I started getting involved into photography.
Regent Park Focus was a place i was very familiar with since it used to house a babysitting facility of which i used to attend when i was very young. I returned in search for some film making skills and to simply escape all the negativity that was going on at the time, in the Regent Park area. Since Regent Park Focus was so close to my house i was treating it like my second home. Later in 1997 my attention was diverted from Focus and I didn't return, until 2004 when i was required to fill some volunteer hours. By March 1st I started working at Regent Park Focus and have been ever since.
I've learned many new skills at Regent Park Focus. I was for a short time, Catch Da Flava on CKLN88.1FM's host. To learn more about what I do at Regent Park Focus click here.
